What is PPE
PPE stands for personal protective equipment. Protective clothing, helmets, goggles, or other garments or equipment designed to protect the wearer's body from injury or infection. The hazards addressed by protective equipment include physical, electrical, heat, chemicals, biohazards, and airborne particulate matter.
What are N95 masks
N95 masks are particle filtering masks that reduce the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles, from small particle aerosols to large droplets. Per the CDC, N95 masks filter out at least 95% of particles in the air, including large and small particles.
What other items can I donate?
At this moment, the most pressing issue is the lack of masks, gowns, face shields and sanitizer.
Additionally, we have encouraged facilities to seek additional needs in the “other” section on the submission form. We suggest you look at an individual request to see the specific needs of that facility or group or search our table for any keywords.
How can I make masks?
While there is not an official pattern or tutorial approved by the CDC, the most popular patterns have a filter pocket and a nose wire. Check out mask tutorials in the Make Masks section.
Where do I find hospitals and facilities accepting donations?
We have a database of facilities currently seeking donations that you can view on our website.
Are you only accepting donation requests from hospitals?
No! We want to help all health care providers in need of PPE, regardless of the facility. Nursing homes, clinics, offices, homeless shelters, and outreach programs.
I made some hand-sewn masks. Can I drop them off at my local hospital?
We recommend checking before you personally drop off any donation. Not all hospitals accept sewn masks. Our website notes what hospitals are accepting with delivery instructions when identified by the requestor. If you are looking to donate to a local facility that is not on our list we recommend calling or looking online first.
Are you accepting monetary donations?
No, Masks For Heroes is not accepting any monetary donations. Furthermore, we are not associated with any organization accepting money.
Are you buying or selling masks?
No, we are only working to connect health care workers in need of PPE with donations. We aren’t selling anything, nor are we associated with any group or website selling PPE.
I don’t have masks and I can’t sew. Are there other ways I can help?
Yes! Help us get the word out on a grassroots level. Like and follow us on our social media channels (can we link here to each?). Share our posts and donation requests, tag your friends and help raise awareness of the dire need for PPE. Many people don’t realize they may have unused N95 masks in a garage or attic, or that their friend or family member who loves to sew can actually help by making masks. Join us in spreading the word.
