Things to Consider Regarding Non-Medical Masks

All of the aforementioned masks are not medical-grade, nor are the designs. Medical-grade masks do not feature such playful patterns and designs; their main purpose is to act as a piece of protective equipment.

However, non-medical grade or cloth masks are allowed for wearing, as they do provide a certain level of protection. But, they are not FDA approved or cleared. Nonetheless, under FDA and EUA, these masks are used as a source control by the general public. As such, the aforementioned masks can be worn by both adults and children.

When buying non-medical grade masks, or when making them on your own, make sure to choose the right materials. Go for 100% cotton or a combination of polyester and cotton. These materials are the most breathable and non-irritating for the skin.

Also, make sure to check the size of the mask and the length of the ear straps. Sometimes the straps can be too large for children, or too small for adults. Opt for masks with adjustable ear straps, and a possible pouch for a filter too. However, this is not a priority with these masks; the filter pouch can just serve as an option fo additional protection.

And finally, make sure to wash your non-medical cloth masks since they’re generally made from washable materials. These masks are reusable and require frequent and regular cleaning and washing. Otherwise, they could act as a secondary transmission source.
